Practicing Tolerance

If we make our goal to live a life of compassion and unconditional love, then the world will indeed become a garden where all kinds of flowers can bloom and grow. (Dr. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross)

A new, spiritually based social activism is beginning to assert itself. It stems not from hating what is wrong and trying to fight it, but from loving what could be and making the commitment to bring it forth. (Marianne Williamson) - www.marianne.com

There have never been two more vital and powerful forces at worked in the world than international capitalist democracy and fundamentalist Islam, nor two forces more capable of physical and cultural destruction: of differing types of warfare against civilians. In the years to come, both sides will need to formulate and inform their behavior with philosophies that reflect an understanding of their own as well as each other’s excesses and commit to genuine programs of reform. Islam must finally reinterpret those contextual, anachronistic passages of the Koran that were so necessary to the survival of the faith in 7th and 8th century Arabia, but that now propel men to self-defeating acts of terror against civilians. Similarly, evangelical Western capitalism must learn greater restraint and respect for other cultures, and Western governments, specially the American, must finally acknowledge that the days of gunboat diplomacy are over and that such behavior itself is ultimately self-defeating. Our defense infrastructure must be designed and employed for the protection of the American people; not [for the protection and proliferation of international] American business… In 1815, an aging Thomas Jefferson went straight to the heart of this point when he asked a friend, “whether profit or preservation is the first interest of the state?” (Caleb Carr from the book The Lessons of Terror)

World peace, like community peace, does not require that each man love his neighbor - it requires only that they live together with mutual tolerance, submitting their disputes to a just and peaceful settlement. (John F. Kennedy)

We all wear different skins, but within we're all the same. (Dean Fraser)

The cause of all human conflict is a simple one; each side dehumanizes the other. Each side sees the other as less worthy. As long as each side perceives the other this way, even the simplest details cannot be negotiated. But let each side bring to the other the attitude of respect and acceptance and even difficult situations will be resolved. (The Christ Mind through Paul Ferrini) - www.paulferrini.com

In the century now dawning; spirituality, visionary consciousness, and the ability to build and mend human relationships will be more important for the fate and safety of this nation than our capacity to forcefully subdue an enemy. Creating the world we want is a much more subtle but more powerful mode of operation than destroying the one we don't want. (Marianne Williamson) - www.marianne.com

The time has now come to build a bridge between all walls. (Dean Fraser)

…there are many of you that spend your time being watchers of what you call "News". You are shown, through your "News" broadcasts much that is in error, much that exists in fear and disharmony. This my dear beings of love, is one of the greatest tests of all - not to condemn, not to judge. To see the action, maybe, as being disharmonious, to see the action as one which is unbalanced, but recognizing also that these unbalanced acts are caused only by the fear that exists within the individual that created that act. And what would you seek to do when you see a being who is acting out of fear, and not out of love? Should you send him/her more judgment? Should you send them more fear? Should you concentrate only upon the "evil" that they have created and done? No! Send them that which they really need in their lives, that which is most lacking. Send them love, send them compassion, send him or her understanding; and in that way do you uniquely honor their part within the Oneness of All. For do you not then also honor and recognize them as an aspect of yourselves - an aspect that is crying out for understanding; for compassion; for love?

We know that it is very difficult for you to practice these things, but practice them, you must. It is not enough merely to recognize the inner truth of these words, and to hold them in your minds. What is required is that you put them into action, each and every single one of you, in each and every moment of time. For it is in this way - practicing love, sending love, grounding and expressing love in the most extreme situations of all - that do you become that love. And as you become that love, does not your light shine forth over the whole of the planet, as examples to all other beings that stand in darkness, that stand in fear, that stand in distress, that LOVE is the only way forward for all? And that it is only through forgiveness that peace can truly be maintained.

Each one of you are being asked to become masters of your own actions; to become masters of your own emotions; to become masters in balance and in love. This is not achieved by drawing away from humanity, and by separating yourselves. This is achieved by taking your actions out into the world. By taking your light to the darkest places, the furthest corners of the globe, and shining it there. There are many of you who will be unable to do this in physicality, but we ask that you spend a little time each day, just a few minutes is all that it needs and takes, to join in your hearts with the oneness of all of humanity, and to send the abundance of love that the Creator has poured down upon you, to those that do not yet stand in realization of this love. It is in this way, in mutual support and harmony, that you will draw together into Oneness, and into Peace. For Sanctuary is not just to be found in the silence within. Sanctuary is to be found in the experience of Life within the energy of Love and Harmony. (Quan Yin)

You don't have to engage in conflict. You can simply let go of your resistance, of your attachments to being "right" or "better than." You can simply let go and let God. Let everyone do the same for themselves. If people have attachments to their way of seeing and being, allow them to remain their way. They will receive what is perfect for them, also. This is an "operation" based in love and respect for all choices. Be responsible for YOUR choices, and let everyone else have the same privilege. (Operation Terra) - www.operationterra.com

Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding. (Albert Einstein)

I do not want the peace which passeth understanding, I want the understanding which bringeth peace. (Helen Keller)

Peace is not won by those who fiercely guard their differences but by those who with open minds and hearts seek out connections. (Katherine Paterson)

Tolerance implies no lack of commitment to one's own beliefs. Rather it condemns the oppression or persecution of others. (John F. Kennedy)

As one embraces another as they are, without requiring to force change upon them or push one's own truth upon them, one may find that they in turn do the same unto oneself. Life is a mirror; as one alters the internal landscape, the mirror changes to reflect the internal changes within. Therefore there is no need to control another, only embrace another as they are, and if one has an emotional charge of judgment; to go within and release the karma locking in the belief underlying the judgment. In so doing, one will come to peace, embracing another as they are, and embrace oneself as one is at the same time. It is only as one embraces oneself unconditionally that one can also embrace another in a parallel manner. It is as one embraces all others unconditionally that unity is born in one's life dance. We must see things from the perspective of the other side... Those who hope for mutual survival with the Arabs must accept a minimum of respect for Arab society. The alternative is unending war. (Uri Sagie - Head of Israeli Military Intelligence, 1991-95)

[Currently, two savior religions are at war], one that is Christian and one that is Muslim are at all time odds. Each group believes that they have the righteous path. This dance of righteous religious paths has lead to war again and again in human history. The only solution is to begin to recognize the God/Goddess-ness within all species including all humans, regardless of sex, religion, cultural practices, beliefs, skin color or heritage. As the God/Goddess is recognized within all things, then the desire to destroy another or destroy earth ceases, as one is only destroying another God/Goddess like oneself in the dance of annihilation. True religion is the life we lead, not the creed we profess. (Louis Nizer)

Yes, we are all different. Different customs, different foods, different mannerisms, different languages, but not so different that we cannot get along with one another. If we will disagree without being disagreeable. (J. Martin Kohe, American Publisher Author)

When you find peace within yourself, you become the kind of person who can live at peace with others. (Peace Pilgrim)

You don't get harmony when everybody sings the same note. (Doug Floyd)

We people of the world need to find ways to get to know one another — for then we will recognize that our likenesses are so much greater than our differences, however great our differences may seem. Every human being is of equal importance and has work to do in the world. (Peace Pilgrim)

Share our similarities, celebrate our differences. (M. Scott Peck)

The highest result of education is tolerance. (Helen Keller)

We can't have a world at peace until people come to accept others that they don't agree with... (Stuart Wilde) - www.stuartwilde.com

Tolerance is the unconditional and cordial effort to allow the beliefs, practices and habits of another without necessarily sharing or accepting them ourselves. (Unknown)

Peace is a state of being in which one simply accepts oneself and all others in the moment. In so doing, one ceases to judge and ceases to blame or shame another or oneself in any manner. Furthermore, peace allows for one to be in one's authentic power, allowing oneself and all others their particular dance of life and expression. As all nations are allowed their unique cultures and unique expressions in equality, peace between nations will one day be the result. (The Tao through Karen Danrich "Mila") www.ascendpress.org

If we cannot end our differences at least we can make the world safe for diversity. (John F. Kennedy, 1917-1963 Thirty-fifth President of the USA)

Prejudice is a wall of fear, built on the sands of suspicion, surrounding the city of insecurity. (Unknown)

Reasoning against prejudice is like fighting against a shadow; it exhausts the reasoner, without visibly affecting the prejudice. (Mildmay)

It is understanding that gives us an ability to have peace. When we understand the other fellow's viewpoint, and he understands ours, then we can sit down and work out our differences. (Harry S. Truman, 1884-1972 Thirty-third President of the USA)

Live and let live. (Scottish Proverb)

The most important trip you may take in life is meeting people halfway. (Henry Boye)
